Music-Minus-one
Play consort music while home alone!
About the service:
|
The ultimate practice tool! I’ve created an exciting, high-quality, Netflix-like service for viol players which lets you stream videos and audio files of consort and baroque music missing one of the parts. Simply choose a piece and any part and you can play along as part of a consort, even if you’re on your own! All recordings are available at both 415Hz AND 440Hz and all sheet music is provided! Just £15 per month gives you access to the full archive of recordings and allows you to submit suggestions for new recordings and tutorials. |

Since it began in May 2020, my service has grown dramatically and now offers more than 50 pieces across many composers, including:
François Couperin,
John Dowland, Orlando Gibbons, John Jenkins, William Lawes, Thomas Lupo, Johann Michael Nicolai, Henry Purcell, …and many more. |
There’s also a beginners section providing more approachable repertoire for those who have recently taken up the viol.
The collection of recordings is continually growing and offers subscribers the chance to commission new works and video tutorials tailored to their interests. The tutorial videos are published on my YouTube channel where they’re available to the public. The recording collection is, however, exclusive to my subscribers. All recordings are available at both A415hz and A440Hz, and video can be played back at 50% and 70% speed to aid practice. All scores and parts are included so you can get going straight away. All the recordings are produced to a high level of video and audio quality - In addition to being a gamba player, I’m also a sound engineer and videographer so my subscribers benefit from my professional recording equipment and knowledge in this area. A subscription of £15 per month gives you access to the complete collection of recordings and the ability to request new additions. Visit patreon.com/SamStadlen to find out more and join my community of 90+ happy subscribers! P.S. You can also find example recordings on my YouTube channel - just search for Sam Stadlen. |
Testimonials:
Dr Sam Stadlen is one of the most outstanding young viol players of his generation. He is also a cellist, musicologist and teacher at The Royal College of Music and he performs regularly with well-known viol ensembles such as Fretwork and Chelys. In addition to all this, Sam has now set up a wonderful video service containing tutorials, music scores, parts and audio files for lonely, isolated players to enjoy whilst in `lockdown’. The videos contain recordings of famous viol ensemble music with Sam playing all parts minus one, which you can then play yourself. These videos will continue to be of great help to viol players even once `lockdown’ has ended.
On a personal level, when I had a Wi-Fi difficulty at home, Sam kindly took the time and trouble to upload some files which I was then able to access without this connection. I wish him every success in his future projects.

“Sam Stadlen’s Music Minus One is the perfect online solution to socially distant viol consort playing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Well-designed, all the printable music and recorded tracks are laid out in an easy-to-use format. I eagerly look forward every week to the new additions continuously added to the project. If only this had been available to viol players four centuries ago!”

Sam's music-minus-one pieces have been a source of both joy and improvement for me ! I have relished the chance to explore the treble parts, and to really start playing tenor too. With all the parts there at my fingertips I have come to know favourite pieces much more fully, and have met many pieces I've never played before. (I've learnt something very valuable about my dotted notes, too!) The sound quality is excellent, and my family now claim they enjoy hearing me practice!

"I was an early subscriber, and play along almost every day. There's a wonderful selection of music: easy for beginners, more difficult for experienced players. You play 'music minus one,' or you can play with the version with your part included. Along with the tutorials, it has been wonderful in these times of social distancing, and I plan to keep subscribing even when the emergency is over”
